Statement
My work moves between analog and digital image-making, combining wet plate collodion, medium format negatives, Polaroid transfers, painting, and other non-photographic processes. I photograph digitally because I live in this world and this era. I work in wet plate because it is physical, beautiful, and timeless. Each process forms an image differently, but all require close attention to time, material, and the physical act of making.
I am interested in human experience and the relationship between individual lives and the environments we share. The attention required by making gives my mind a place to focus and rest.
Each piece is shaped by the relationship between me and what is in front of me, whether a person, place, or landscape. This is most visible in portraiture, which is an exchange between the sitter and the photographer. Each portrait begins with someone agreeing to share that time and space, sometimes for only a few seconds. Wet plate makes the encounter especially physical: light and chemistry form the image directly on the plate, leaving traces of the handmade process within the finished work. The image holds both the subject and the exchange through which it was made.
